identity theft still seems to be a growing problem in the country. For the 12th consecutive year, identity theft topped the list of consumer complaints that the federal trades Commission received in 2011, showing that people are still not proactive about protecting their identity.
Of the 1.8 million complaints the FTC received 15% of them were on identity theft . The complaints concerned the theft of government relating to the identity document, which represented 27% of the complains and increased 11% from last year, followed by cases of credit card fraud (14% ), as well as fraud or telephone utilities and bank fraud. The most cases are concentrated in Florida, followed by Georgia and California. Approximately 70% of these complaints reported the theft to local authorities, a good first step in the recovery of identity theft.
