If you choose to book your own travel you can redeem the miles you earn online for reimbursement of the cost of buying travel. That means if you book your own travel, you will earn miles that you can redeem against a declaration of credit, cash back, gift cards or merchandise. (Note: You have 90 days from the date of your travel purchase posts to your return to redeem your miles). It may seem a little complicated, but it helps to think of your miles as something you can either jump on travel (using the Rewards Centre) or convert to cash back (by booking the trip yourself, then using the miles you've earned to pay you a credit report).
